Cambridge Kidical Mass Report

The first ever Cambridge Kidical Mass ride was a big success!  We had about 24 bikes and 40 participants, young and old.  The Cambridge Bike Police provided fabulous support for the ride, and really helped things run smoothly.  It felt so nice to be surrounded by fellow families of bikers, and to feel so supported by our city.  Plans are already hatching for future rides.

We had only one kid on her own bike, so pacing was a bit tricky at first, but after a bit we figured out the right speed for Julia (age 5) to keep up, and she biked the full 3 miles completely on her own (overcoming a bum training wheel to boot — thanks Brian for bringing tools!). We’re hoping on future rides to have more kids biking on their own.

We really felt inspired by the bike community that we found during this ride. We rode with some friends and neighbors that we already knew well, people we’ve admired online (like spokes for folks), people who reached out to help (like Brian of bummels and jaunts and MassBike, and Anton who volunteered and took awesome pictures), and people who came from such far-flung locales as Jamaica Plain and Watertown. And I have to say that I’m personally proud that there were not one or two, but three queer families represented at the ride!

I think you’ll get a good sense of the ride by checking out this video, shot by spokes for folks, who put it in their post about the ride.

Thanks to everyone who came. Hopefully we’ll see all of you again soon!

I wish we could have made it! I was a complete airhead and thought it was in the afternoon, and of course didn’t check the start time until well past 11. My 5yo son was pretty disappointed too; I promised him I’d find out if there was going to be another one this year.
